The Iowa Galle's
The Iowa clan of Galle's come from a brother of our Peter, a Jakob Galley from Germany. Peter the youngest of nine children would probably not have inherited anything and he had relatives and friends here, so he came to America in the late 1700's. His brother Jakob's line stayed in Germany and ran the family mill until 1850. They then came to America and settled in Iowa retaining the original German spelling of Galle. With the death of our Peter at an early age, his German family did not hear from him again and was lost to them. There was no connection of these two lines until recently when Harry Galley found enough evidence in the Iowa clan and their German relations to connect the two lines to our Peter Galley. Descendants of Jakob Jacob Gallé IIGeneration No. 11. JAKOB JACOB10 GALLÉ II (JAKOB JAKOBUS9, JAKOB JACOB8, PETER GALLI7, PETER
GALLI6, HANS (JOHANNES)5 GALLI, UELI ULRICH4, ULRICH3, ULRICH2, PETER GALLI OR1
GALDI) was born September 15, 1802 in Uffhofen Geistermuhle, Rhenish
Hesse, Germany, and died April 11, 1852 in Donnellson, Lee, Iowa. Children of JAKOB GALLÉ and ANNA KÄGYNotes for JAKOB JACOB GALLÉ II: Jacob succeeded his father as minister of the Church at Uffhofen. Probably about 1828, during his ministry the church building in Uffhofen was erected. He was a Muller and a Muller u. Bauer as his profession. The family were Mennonites. He is the Galle who sold the Geistermuhle in 1850 and brought his family to the United States. Am 12.9.1850 ist die ganze ffamilie nach USA ausgewandert. Die Geistermuhle verkauften sie an einen gewissen Valentin Trapp aus Ensheim. {Ensheim is located just north of Alzey, it is a very small village.} In Amerika ist der Name ziemlich haufig. On September 12 1850 the entire family emigrated to the USA. They sold the Geistermuhl to Valentin Trapp who was from Ensheim. In America the name is rather haufig. They came to America "mit Familie (Frau, Kindern u. Mutter) sowie Landsleuten (vgl. QAA - Schiff "Wilhelm Tell" They left Abf. Uffhofen 10.9.1850 Abf. Le Havre 20.1850 Ank. N. In coming to America they traveled with miller (Jacob I) Krehbiel's from Weierhof, young people Christian and Henry Krehbiel. Others on board "William Tell" ship were Kagy, Rings, Schowalter, Rev. Bergman, Carl Hohn and Peter Klander They stayed at friend Latschar home in New York. They were visited by Corins from Wendelsheim and Spaanheimer and Diehl from Uffhofen. They took the steamer to Buffalo, New York on November 1 and stayed at friend Eymann in Ohio. In the winter Galle, Krehbiel, Eymann & Schwan went to visit in Town to buy land. The journey took them from Alzey - Monzernheim - Mainz - Bingen - Dordrecht - Rotterdam (mainly down the Rhine River.) On the November 9 1850 they arrived at Ashland county, Ohio then by 1851 they were in Donnellson-Franklin Prairie, Iowa. References are: Mennonite Lexikon I. To this group of emigrants belong also families from Fiedersheim and Kindenheim as well as the family of Peter Weber from the Naumburgerhof, at that time called Kries Rokkenhausen. Following them there was a second wave with Christian Schowalter from Assenheim as the group's minister and teacher. They established a congregation at Donnellson in Lee County, Iowa, and built a meetinghouse in 1856 which was rebuilt in 1908-09. The membership list in 1921 stood at sixty-five families, and in 1940 in spite of a strong movement to other states eighty-five families remained. {Mennononitisches Lexikon, s.v. Information taken from the: "Short History Of The Galle Family by Rev. William Galle as Translated from the German Language By His Son Kurt R. Galle (1893-1973) "During the winter, (1850) father, Krehbiel, Eyman and Schwan went to Iowa. From the Franklin Prairie in Lee County they went north as far as Iowa City. They examined land possibilities, got information on prices and learned the opinion of inhabitants, both those of acquaintances as well as those of strangers. The Gram family lived in West Point. Mrs. Gram was a second cousin to mother. Rev. Ellenberger and his son-in-laws Christian and Daniel Rings lived on the Franklin Prairie. After they had examined all possibilities, they returned to Ohio without purchasing land at this time. Removal To The New Home - Iowa Upon their return, immediate preparations were made for moving to Iowa with the families. The families took a steamer on the Ohio River from Cincinnati to St. Louis and on to Ft. Madison. This proved to be a wearisome journey. They went on a steamer by way of the Ohio River from Cincinnati to St. Louis, and from here to Ft. Madison, Iowa. Here our people were met by Grams, and the others went to West Point. In West Point they rented dwellings located close together. After other matters had been somewhat arranged, father and Krehbiel went to the Franklin Prairie and purchased land. Father purchased a farm located to the west and right beside that of Rev. Ellenberger. Mr. Krehbiel purchased a farm located to the north and west across the road from ours. As soon as the previous owners of the land were able to give possession, our families moved into their new homes. Thus, in the spring of 1851 we again had a home. The buildings on the newly acquired farm were very primitive. The chief buildings were a log cabin and a log barn. There also was a smoke house built of logs, but it was probably erected by our folks. The house contained one large room about 18 by 26 feet, but it had no cellar. Immediately during the following summer a cellar was excavated on the east right side next to the house. Since no mason was available, father undertook to learn this trade without skilled assistance. The cellar was still far from finished when winter was at hand. This farm was later owned by Ernest Krehbiel. The Zion Mennonite Church Cemetery wasn't started until April 1, 1854. So the Mennonite Church members used the Church of the German Evangelical Congregation before this time. n More About JAKOB JACOB GALLÉ II: Burial: April 13, 1852, Donnellson, Lee, Iowa Notes for ANNA KÄGY: She was orphaned during her maiden years. He moved to Christian, Kansas during the week of August 17, 1876, along with other relatives, (diary of Magdalena Schowalter Vogt) and became a member of the Christian Mennonite Church. The original town was called "Christian" since three of the land owners surrounding the village were named "Christian" (Christian Krehbiel, Christian Hirschler, Christian Voran). The fourth owner was Christian Krehbiel's brother, Daniel Krehbiel. This town was located one mile south of where Moundridge stands today. In September, 1873, the first Mennonite settlement was made in the southern part of the county, the colony making the purchase of a large tract of land from the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Rail road Company, besides buying from homesteaders. The entire town move one mile north in 1887 so that it would be near the railroad tracks. While the name of the village "Christian" had no religious significance, the First Mennonite Church of Christian, was moved from the village to the new town of Moundridge. The name Moundridge was chosen to describe the position of the town on the land. The center of town (the four-way stop downtown) is the high point, standing on a small mound of land. That mound sits a top a ridge of land that runs from the northeast to the southwest. You can test this yourself by standing at the center of downtown and looking in all four directions. all four directions run downhill. Many street names in Moundridge were named after males with the exception of Thornton Cole's wife, Drucilla. This street, the only street named with a lady's names, is a north-south street located on the west side of town. In 1997 there are 3 Mennonite churches: 1st Mennonite Church, 345-2546 719 South Christian, Gospel Mennonite Church 345-2534 522 Wedel and West Zion Mennonite Church 345-8143 101 South Washington. Kansas. He married (1) MARIA "MARY" KREHBIEL November 12, 1882 in Zion Mennonite Church, Donnellson, Lee, Iowa, daughter of JACOB KREHBIEL and MAGDALENA SCHNEBELE. She was born January 03, 1854 in Franklin township, Lee, Iowa, and died December 08, 1888 in Christian, McPherson, Kansas. He married (2) ANNA KREHBIEL October 02, 1892 in Zion Mennonite Church, Donnellson, Lee, Iowa, daughter of JACOB KREHBIEL and MAGDALENA SCHNEBELE. She was born December 19, 1863 in Franklin township, Lee, Iowa, and died March 12, 1954 in Newton, Harvey, Kansas. Notes for WILHELM "WILLIAM" GALLÉ REV.: He was the author of the Booklet "A Short History Of The Galle Family, by Rev. William Galle, as Translated From the German Language By His Son Kurt R. Galle. Marriage record: Wm Galle age 33 married Mary Krehbiel age 28 on November 12, 1882 in Franklin township, Lee county, Iowa. "In 1850, our family became interested in going to America, A number of acquaintances who had migrated earlier were well pleased with America, and had improved themselves financially. However, this was not the original motive for the desire to migrate in the case of our family." Grandfather wanted to retire, and while he wanted to spend his later years in the mill, father (Jakob) was to assume the responsibility for its management. As part of the plan, Jakob was to have the privilege of purchasing the mill and the rest of the estate for a reasonable price. However, grandfather died before these arrangements were completed. In the administration of the estate the other children expressed the desire that grandfather's plan be followed, but the price which father paid for the mill proved to be quite high, so that he had to assume a considerable debt. In spite of this all would have been well, had unforeseen obstacles not developed. Due to excessive rains one year, heavy water pressure wrecked the dam above the mill. Father had the court specify the proper height of the dam and preparations to build anew. However, the miller who had the water rights above our mill, contested father's right to build the dam at the specified height, and father was required to take the matter to court. In order to settle this dispute and also to avoid future disagreements, the state itself decided to construct the dam. Although this had the advantage of preventing further disputes, construction by the state is much more costly then private enterprise, so that the little dam cost over 6000 Gulden (about $3,000 in 1899). This meant a heavy debt on the property, and father realized that it would be impossible for him to meet this added obligation. So our parents, with much reluctance, decided to sell the property inherited from their fathers. Giving up the home proved to be a very difficult ordeal for mother, but my brother tried to console her for through the change they would be released from military obligation. Even though she realized that circumstances made it necessary, mother never derived genuine pleasure in making plans for the change. Another inducement appeared when the family of the miller Krehbiel from Weierhof decided to join the migration to America, so our family was not alone in making the change. In September 27, 1863 he was baptized into the Zion Mennonite Church at Donnellson, Iowa. In October of 1875 he joined the Salem Mennonite Church at Daytonville, Iowa. William attended Wadsworth Institute, Wadsworth, Ohio, entering as a member of the founding class on January 2, 1868, and graduated in June 1871. He returned to Iowa, where he worked as a Mennonite pastor and teacher in Washington county, Iowa. His first church was in Washington county, Iowa near Dayton, Iowa, today Daytonville is near Wellman and Keota, Iowa. In 1875 the family moved to Washington county, Iowa, where they became members of the Salem Mennonite church there. His membership ceased by letter on October 1875 when he moved in June 1871 to Washington county, Iowa. In 1880 he moved to Christian, McPherson county, Kansas, where he served as associate pastor at Christian Mennonite Church, and also as postmaster. The reason for going to Kansas in 1878 was for health. [BO: Letter from William Galle to his cousin Jakob Gallé in Uffhofen, Germany: June 14, 1884 from Christian, McPherson county, Kansas, where William was Assistant Pastor at Christian First Mennonite Church at that time. "I was very pleased to receive from you (Jakob Gallé) the chronicle of our family, as it is known. I would also like to have the register of births which you mention. If you will pardon me, I have another question. The chronicle states that Peter Gallé emigrated to America, and the ship required a full year to cross the Atlantic. How did Uncle David know this. Did Peter Gallé write this from America? If he did, Please send me a copy of his letter, if it still exists. "I have been told by someone from Pennsylvania that there are Galles living there, but they write their name Golly. The English pronunciation of this spelling is the same as that of the Gallé name in German. These people might have had Mennonite parents, however, they now belong to another church .... " Heinrich Gallé of Uffhofen, Germany has the original letter, which was written in a small old-style German script, and he also supplied his translation of this part, which Kurt Galle has cleaned up from his slightly broken English:BO] He then taught school again, preached and was the assistant at Christian, Kansas. When the post office was moved about 1/2 miles north of serve the town of Moundridge, newly established closer the railroad then being constructed through the region, he personally supervised the physical removal of the Post Office structure to Moundridge and became the first postmaster in the new community. When West Zion Mennonite Church, named after the church in Donnellson, Iowa, was established in Moundridge in 1888, he was founding pastor and served the church until his death. He is buried in the West Zion Mennonite Cemetery, just west of Moundridge, Kansas. 19. KURT RAPHAEL12 GALLE (WILHELM "WILLIAM" GALLÉ11 REV., JAKOB JACOB10 GALLÉ II, JAKOB JAKOBUS9, JAKOB JACOB8, PETER GALLI7, PETER GALLI6, HANS (JOHANNES)5 GALLI, UELI ULRICH4, ULRICH3, ULRICH2, PETER GALLI OR1 GALDI) was born July 18, 1893 in Moundridge, McPherson, Kansas, and died January 21, 1973 in Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas. He married LOUISA M. EPP December 26, 1920 in Newton, Harvey, Kansas, daughter of JACOB EPP and MARGARETHA WIENS. She was born December 21, 1895 in Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas, and died March 15, 1996 in Newton, Harvey, Kansas. Notes for KURT RAPHAEL GALLE: The compilation and development of this family tree was begun by Kurt R. Galle, grandson of the emigrating Jacob Galle. He first "completed" it in the early 1950's. He is the one that translated the "Galle Family History" from German to English that his father William had worked on. On page 13 of his work is: Kurt R. Galle who prepared this material was a teacher. His last position so far as I know was as Academic dean of Arkansas City Junior College in Arkansas City, Kansas. In one letter to me he expressed a strong interest in visiting Wadsworth, Ohio, the site of the first Mennonite School. We had hoped that he would stop at Bluffton on the way but apparently he did not make the trip. He mentioned that Emma Krehbiel Bachman was his aunt. He also mentioned that he has a son with the Pillsbury Company in Minneapolis. This was of special interest to us as when we visited with our daughter Elizabeth and family in Mt. Lake, Minn. we stopped in a nearby town of Windom. The operator of the Ben Franklin store was Mr. John Galle. I gave him the information about the Galles that I had but we were not able to connect the two families. I though that he looked very much like one of the Kansas Galles who was a minister. {This was written by Howard Raid in the early 1960's} When we visited in the Weierhof in Germany our host to give us a tour of the village was Christian Galle. He was then an old man in 1964. He has written and collected a great deal about the village and its families. Some of the oldest information that we have about the Krehbiel families in the Weierhof was his work. August Krehbiel's Mother was Elizabeth Gallé, he came to the States when he was 19 years old and later married Laura Krebill. Many of the Galles married into the Weierhof families. This was reprinted January 1976 at Bluffton College, Bluffton, Ohio for Howard Raid. I don't know who added the remarks starting with: " Kurt R. Galle who .... I believe it was Roberta Krehbiel of Donnellson, Iowa Kurt R. Galle 7-18-1893 to 1-21-1973. His early education was in the Moundridge public schools and Bethel Academy. He graduated from Bethel College in the Class of 1921. He taught school at Dodge City, Kansas, but left after one year to enter Graduate School at the University of Chicago, where he received the M. A. degree in 1924. Kurt then moved to Arkansas City, Kansas to teach in the high school and a new Junior College being established there. He remained in Arkansas City, ultimately becoming Dean of the Junior College and principal of the high School, until his retirement in 1963 and his death in 1973. In 1920 he married Louisa M. Epp, of Newton, Kansas, and they had 3 sons; William J., Kurt R., and Edward L. Dean Galle had a lifelong interest in the Galle Family History, and spent many hours translating the records of his father William and securing information from other sources. His papers include the translation of his father's family history, and a great deal of reference material. These records are located at Bethel College library at Newton, Kansas. This effort was completed in September of 1983. It was completed this far only with much assistance from many aunts, uncles and cousins. The tree was begun by Kurt R. Galle, grandson of the emigrating Jacob Galle. He first "completed" it in the early 1950's. Following Uncle Kurt's death Lorraine decided to try to develop the tree further and into a form that could be more easily copied. I received this booklet in the mail on December 15, 1997 from Lorraine E. Galle. I finished copying the data into the Galley data base on December 31, 1997. HDG I sent her the Galley "Blue Book" to read in December 1997. She attended the Galle family reunion of 1998 in Kansas. We visited her at her home in August of 1999.
